Synthesis of Poly(arylene ether) with Controlled Molecular Weight and Narrow Polydispersities via Chain-growth Polycondensation. |

Classical polycondensation is a step-growth process, in which molecular weight of polymers is generally difficult to control and molecular weight distribution approaches 2 theoretically at high conversion aside from exception. To obtain the controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities, polycondensation should proceed by chain-growth mechanism rather than step growth. Nature already uses a chain-growth polycondensation process to synthesize monodisperse biopolymers such as DNA and polypeptides. We have synthesized well defined condensation polymer, poly(arylene ether) containing an azobenzene group in main chains, through chain-growth polycondensation. Under certain condition, AB' type monomers don't react each other but react with B type initiator which has more reactive sites. And then the monomers undergo polymerization in a chain-growth manner to give a well defined condensation polymer with narrow polydispersity. |
