In this study, control of the handedness of helical nanofilaments (HNFs) formed by achiral bent-core molecules is demonstrated using chiral dopants. Doping chiral dopants into the achiral bent-core molecules was regarded as one of the effective method to control the handedness HNFs. However, in actual the doping method in bent-core molecular systems showed scarcely effects on induced handedness of HNFs in most cases. This is because that mesophases found in the bent-core molecules are different from conventional phase found in rodlike molecules. Hence, we mixed a bent-core molecule showing HNFs with a rodlike molecule exhibiting the conventional nematic (N) phase, and we strategically realized the mixture exhibiting the phase sequence of N–HNFs on cooling. Consequently, we succeeded in obtaining homochiral HNFs by doping a small amount of chiral dopants into the mixture. |
