Thermo-responsive polymer draw solutes for forward osmosis (FO) application |

A series of copolymers was synthesized by free radical polymerization (FRP) using thermo-responsive monomer and ionic monomer as monomers, in order to apply the copolymers as draw solutes in the forward osmosis (FO) system. Molecular weights and chemical structures of the copolymers were analyzed by water GPC and 1H NMR, respectively, indicating that the composition of two monomers could be controlled by changing the feed molar ratio of two monomers. With showing proper osmotic pressure and water permeation flux, resulting copolymers exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST) which could be controlled by changing the compositions of two monomers. Additionally, over 99.7% of the copolymers were recovered by a heating process, followed by a filtration process. We believe that the copolymers focused in this study are promising candidates for the draw solute application. |
