A number of studies have been recently focused on the exploration of appropriate draw solutes which demonstrate several characteristics including high water solubility, high osmotic pressure, high water flux, low reverse solute flux, and effecient regeneration in the forward osmosis (FO) system. We herein report the syntehsis and characterization of thermo-responsive polymeric and oligomeric draw solutes for FO application. It was found that the draw solutes exhibit low reverse solute flux and simple recovery. Especially, the draw solute in water could be simply separated and recovered by heating above their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) without any other membrane separation process. Taking our results into consideration, the thermo-responsive draw solutes are possible candidate to produce enormous quantatiy of water from the brackish water with low energy consumption. |
