Here we propose a new embolic coil based on polymer for treatment of cerebral anuerysm. The metal-polymer composite was fabricated from poly(vinyl alcohol) and tantalum, which were cross-linked by glutaraldehyde (GA). It was characterized in terms of cross-linker contents and swelling ratio. Combining two films having different cross-linker contents, single coil were developed. It could absorb water with the environment to induce bending movement, resulting in making circle or vortex shape. The morphology and interface of the coil had been studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and and X-ray visibility was measured upon contents of tantalum. Finally, this study examined the in-vivo characteristics of a coil for the target. These results demonstrated that size of a bending coil was controlled by their cross-linker contents and consequently the use of an embolic hydrogel coil was a feasible and useful method. |
