Resol type phenolic beads were synthesized by suspension polymerization, and carbonized to spherical active carbon particles. Due to the high crosslinking density, during carbonization process phenolic beads can be hardly shrinked, whereas the macropores can be easily formed in the beads and thus compression strength of the beads is significantly reduced. In order to decrease the degree of crosslink and to control the carbonization process, o-cresol was used as a comonomer in synthesizing phenolic beads. The controlled phenolic beads can be expected to show the changes in the properties such as degree of swelling, crosslinking density, shrinkage during carbonization, yield of carbonization, density after carbonization, mechanical strength, and so on. In this study UTM, DSC, TGA, SEM were used in examining these correlation. |
