Preparation and flammability properties of Polypropylene-based resin/clay nanocomposites |

Nanocomposites are a new class of polymer system. Modified layered silicates as fillers are dispersed at a nanometer-level within a polymer matrix and new extraordinary properties are observed. In this study, Polypropylene-based resin/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt compounding method. As a compatibilizer, MA-g-PP was used in order to assist the dispersibility of clay in the matrix resin. Through the analysis of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurement of the nanocomposites, the dispersion of clay was investigated. Cone Calorimeter was used to measure the heat release rate and other flammability properties of the nanocomposites, under the well-controlled conditions. The combustion residues were studied by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We found evidence for a common mechanism of flammability reduction. |
