Polyethylene wax (PEW) which is by-product produced in a manufacturing process of high density polyethylene (HDPE) is a nonpolar material having a molecular weight of 500~10000 g/mol. To functionalize PEW through a introduction of polarity, maleic anhydride (MAH) as a polar monomer is being widely used on the grafting polymerization. However the grafting degree of PEW-g-MAH is relatively low compared to other polyethylene. Styrene which is good electron-donating monomer tends to activate the MAH double bond by forming a charge transfer complex, which is expected to increase reactivity toward PEW. In this study, we investigated effect of addition of styrene on grafting degree of PEW-g-MAH. In addition, we observed changes of grafting degree by changing molar ratio of styrene and MAH, and reaction temperature. |
