Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Polybetaines |

Novel monomers bearing propyl and cyclohexyl groups on the side chain were synthesized from acetoacetic ester and amines such as propylamine and cyclohexylamine. They were involved in a Michael addition reaction with acrylic and methacrylic acid followed by radical polymerization. As a result both linear and crosslinked betaine-type polyampholytes were obtained. The polybetaines were characterized by FTIR, NMR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy as well as by TGA and DSC. The ionization constants of acid and base groups were calculated from the Henderson-Hasselbach equation. A considerable influence of the water content on the yield of the linear polymers and the swelling degree of the hydrogels was established. The dependence of swelling degree on the chain length and amount of crosslinking agent was studied. |
