Recently, we reported that semifluorinated random copolymers composed of 2-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) and perfluorooctyl methacrylate (FOMA) were utilized as an effective stabilizer for the dispersion polymerization of MMA in scCO2, with providing dramatically large stabilization to the polymer latexes even at very low content of FOMA. In particular, DMAEMA was found to have an extraordinary stabilization effect on the polymerization due to the low Tg and basic nitrogen which interacts with the Lewis acid, CO2, compared with other hydrocarbon methacrylate comonomers. In this paper, we have explored the use of fluorine-free random copolymeric stabilizers based on DMAEMA in the dispersion polymerization of MMA in scCO2. Tris(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (SiMA) was employed as a non-fluorous CO2-philic comonomer, and the resulting random copolymers were found to be effective stabilizers producing spherical PMMA particles. |
