Effect of calcination temperature on the synthesis of cobalt encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes as bi-functional catalyst for ORR and OER in an alkaline solution |

Cobalt-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/NCNT) were synthesized by graphitization of dicyandiamide, with cobalt as the catalyst, in a one-step pyrolysis method. The pyrolysis temperature was varied from 700-900oC, respectively. In this study, the effect of heat-treatment temperature on the formation of carbon nanotube, and on its physical and electrochemical properties were determined. SEM analysis of the pyrolyzed Co/NCNT precursor at 700oC, 800oC and 900oC have shown the formation of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube with cobalt being embedded in it. The size, and the amount of Co/NCNT formed are observed to be influenced by the temperature. The electrochemical characteristic of the synthesized Co/NCNT was evaluated by its ORR and OER catalytic performance in 8M KOH solution.
