We have synthesized poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylthioalkyl (PEO-aTb) or alkylsulfonylalkyl (PEO-aSb) side groups. To study the effect of the position of the sulfone group on the mesomorphic behavior, we intentionally fixed the length of the side group, such as 10 atoms in the side chain skeleton, to eliminate the effect of side chain length on the mesomorphic properties. Poly[(w-chloroalkyl)oxirane]s (a=1~4) were prepared, and then the chlorine in the side chain was substituted by sodium n-alkanethiolate (b=5~8), to induce poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylthioalkyl side groups. The thioether containing polymers were oxidized to poly(oxyethylene)s containing alkylsulfonylalkyl side groups using m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid as oxidant. These polymers were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). |
