Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) is a promising synthetic biopolymer derived from biomass through bioconversion and polymerization. The disadvantage of PLA is that it is too soft above its glass transition temperature and has low toughness, which limits its application. Its brittleness is also a disadvantage for its application in various commercial items, especially the foamed sheet. In this study, we investigated to improve the brittleness using the various types of alcohol via alcoholysis with the dry and wet method. First, the wet method was shown that controlled degradation of PLA can be achieved by alcoholysis with various types of alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. Secondly, the dry method based the wet method and using the types of peroxide by the crosslinking agent in the Brabender Plasticorder. The chemical structures, thermal and mechanical properties were investigated by FT-IR spectrometers, differential scannig calorimetry(DSC) and universal testing machine. |
