To develop a novel polymeric film with optical anisotropy, triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC) monomer was synthesized. The DLC shows columnar liquid crystalline (LC) ordered structure and its microscopic molecular orientation was successfully controlled by manipulation of orientation of nematic LC medium and surface alignment layer. Macroscopic morphology of polymeric pattern was obtained by photo-polymerization with patterned photo-mask. The director of DLC columns in the stripe-pattern is oriented perpendicular to the surface alignment direction regardless of the macroscopic pattern morphology. The optical anisotropy of patterned DLC network was observed using polarized optical microscopy (POM) analysis.
