Biopolymer-mediated Controllable Bacterial Attachment for Microfluidic Applications |

We have developed a controllable bacterial attachment method using an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) and a cell-repellent polymer. The surface of Escherichia coli K-12 was conjugated with ELP and the glass substrate was functionalized with ELP. Cell-repellent polymer was used to make a defined micropattern and prevent nonspecific bacterial attachment. Reversible bacterial attachment and detachment was achieved by controlling the phase transition of ELP molecules. This method can be applied to the bacterial flagella-powered applications including mixing, pumping, and transporting. The common problems in bacterial microfluidic applications, especially bacterial lysis and contamination caused by bacterial differentiation, can be overcome by this method. |
