The effect of an incorporation of maleic anhydride in the blends of EVA/ethylene-α-olefin copolymers with 1-butene (EtBC) and 1-octene (EtOC) were studied using EVA28 (VA 28%). EVA/ethylene-α-olefin copolymers are immiscible regardless of the VA contents in the melt and solid state, but the mechanical properties are comparable. By adding 1, 2, and 3 phr of MA in the presence of dicumylperoxide, the morphology of EVA/EtBC and EVA/EtOC blends significantly enhanced. In addition, the tensile strength at break and 100 and 300 % of modulus improved, but the elongation at break decreased with EtBC or EtOC: the best properties were obtained with 1 and 2 phr of MA. Thus, the addition of MA in the blends of EVA/ethylene-α-olefin copolymers acts not only as a compatibilizer, but also as a reinforcing agent. |
