Polysilsesquioxanes (PSSQ), (RSiO1.5)n, having iso-butyl substituent groups were synthesized as a function of concentration and solvent by acid catalyzed hydrolytic condensation reaction from alkyltrialkoxysilane, and were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry and graphite plate laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GPLDI-TOF MS) for the analysis of the microstructures. These results show that the microstructures of alkylsilsesquioxane were primarily affected by the size of substituent and little dependent on the concentration and solvent. Also, iso-butylsilsesquioxane copolymers using 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane (BTMSE) with a ethylene bridging group or methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) were synthesized. Their microstructures indicate that these comonomers prevent the formation of cage structures of iso-butylsilsesquioxane and lead to the formation of open branched structures. |
