In general, AB diblock copolymers are synthesized by sequential addition of two kinds of monomers. In this case, homo-polymer of the first block can be made as a side product. Recently, a new synthetic method using the click chemistry to connect two kinds of homo-polymers has been tried after two homo-polymers are synthesized separately by ATRP or anionic polymerization. This method has an advantage to introduce specific functional groups in two blocks through modification of the homo-polymers while both homo-polymers can remain as side products due to the difficulty of exact stoichiometric reaction. In this study, we analyzed PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymers by solvent gradient HPLC of which PS and PMMA blocks were synthesized by ATRP and connected by click reaction. We confirmed the existence of both PS and PMMA homo-polymers as side-products and we were able to fractionate pure PS-b-PMMA diblock copolymers out by full adsorption-desorption type LC separation. |
