Li-air batteries have attracted considerable attention due to their higher energy density compared with conventional Li-ion batteries. Such a high energy density is attributed to the use of Li metal for the anode and oxygen gas as an active material for the cathode. However, in the batteries employing Li metal as an anode, Li metal has been suffered from drawbacks of uncontrollable Li dendrites and low coulombic efficiency. In addition, for the Li-air batteries opened to outside air, harmful gases can easily diffuse from outside atmosphere to contaminate Li metal electrode. Therefore, to suppress the dendritic growth of Li and prevent the contamination of Li metal by the outside impurities, the protected lithium electrode (PLE), in which Li metal electrode is covered with solid electrolyte layers, has been suggested. In this presentation, we introduce our deveopment history of LLTO based solid electrolytes for the application in Li-air batteries: from PLE to all-solid-state cell. |
