Characterization of carbon nanotube fibers from the hierarchical viewpoint |

An assembly of carbon nanotube (CNT) like fiber has been studied to overcome the length limitation of CNTs and to use the extraordinary properties of CNTs to various industrial applications. The reported properties of CNT fiber are comparable to those of other conventional materials but have not reached to the properties of individual CNT. We think that understanding of a structural status of CNT fiber and a difference from a perfect form of CNT assembly is the key point to achieve the properties of CNT from CNT assembly. The structural status of CNT fiber has been understood from the failure mechanism studies of CNT fiber which showed the rearrangement of CNTs and CNT bundles during the tensile test. The tissue of mammals like skin or tendon which has the hierarchical structures also showed this structural behavior, and the structure status of each tissue is different depending on each function. Therefore we tried to study the structural behavior of CNT fiber with controlling the structural status at synthesize step and calculate the maximum properties of CNT fibers with perfect form based on the hierarchical viewpoint. |
