A method for the analysis of acrylonitrile,1,3-butadiene, isoprene, benzene, and toluene in cigarette mainstream smoke has been developed, which use gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with selected ion monitoring(SIM) mode. The volatiles in mainstream smoke were collected from smoking machine (RM20H, Borgwaldt KC, Germany) with impinger. The use of benzene-d6 as internal standards along with the application of the standard addition method results; the inter-day precision for the volatiles was under 10%, the intra-day precision for the volatiles was under 10%, the accuracy ranged from 80~120%, the linearity ranged from 0.99 to 0.999, the recovery ranged from 80~120%. This method was applied to two reference cigarette; 3R4F and 1R5F (University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA). This analytical method is proved to be suitable for the simultaneous determination of the volatiles formation during smoking in terms of selectivity, sensitivity, precision and accuracy. |
