A method for the analysis of Arsenic(As), Cadmium(Cd), Chromium(Cr), Lead(Pb), Nickel(Ni) and Selenium(Se) in cigarette mainstream smoke has been developed, with the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Heavy metals in mainstream smoke were collected from smoking machine (RM2OH, Borgwaldt KC, Germany) with impinger and electrostatic unit. The use of the Yittrium(Y) as internal standard along with the application of the standard addition method results; the inter-day precision for the heavy metals was under 10%, the intra-day precision for the heavy metals was under 5%, the accuracy ranged from 80~120%. the linearity ranged from 0.9999 to 0.99999, and the limit of quantification ranged from 0.03 to 10.08 ng/cig. This method was applied to two reference cigarette; 3R4F and IR5F(University of Kentucky, Lexington, USA). This analytical method is proved to be suitable for the simultaneous determination of heavy metals formation during smoking at trace levels in terms of selectivity, sensitivity, precision and accuracy. |
