Swelling behaviors of hydrogels in buffer solutions of different ionic strength |

A lattice model is presented to describe swelling behaviors of hydrogels in buffer solutions of different ionic strength. The poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) bulk gel is prepared by radical polymerization to observe the swelling behavior in aqueous solutions with various pH and ionic strength. The Gibbs energy of mixing contains an electrostatic contribution given by Pitzer’s extension of the Debye–Huckel function and the modified double lattice theory. The electrostatic contribution does not contain adjustable parameters. We show that the electrostatic contribution to the Gibbs energy of mixing is responsible for inducing ionic strength dependent swelling behavior of PNIPA gel. |
