Nanocellulose has a great interest as excellent reinforcement for biocomposite because of its remarkable mechanical properties, lightness, and biodegradability. However, the nanocellulose tends to be aggregated due to the strong surface interaction between individual nanocellulose particles by the numerous hydrophilic sites, resulting in poor dispersion in the non-polar polymer matrix. In this research, to improve dispersion of nanocellulose, long alkyl chain which has hydrophobicity was substituted for hydroxyl group of nanocellulose. Octyl (-C8H17) and dodecyl (-C12H25) group were attached to the hydroxyl group. After the surface modification, change of the chemical structure, thermal property, contact angle, morphology and crystallinity of octyl and dodecyl nanocelluloses were investigated. Furthermore, the reinforcing effect of alkyl celluloses on polylactide composite was confirmed. This research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (Project No. 2013022313). |
