Radical scavenging and total phenolic content of selected Nepalese medicinal plants |

In present study sixteen ethanol extracts of Nepalese medicinal plants that are traditionally used in the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases were screened for their radical scavenging ability and total phenolic content. Plant extracts were measured on the basis of their scavenging ability with stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical and the total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Woodfordia fruticosa, Azadirachta indica, Terminalia belerica and Terminalia chebula were the strongest radical scavengers among the plants screened and contained high phenolic content. The extract having higher phenolic content showed stronger radical scavenging activity showing contribution of phenolics towards radical scavenging ability. |
