Nanoimaging of technetium-labelled Galactosylated Chitosan for Liver-specific Diagnosis |

The need to develop target-specific MRI contrast agents to aid disease diagnosis remains highly essential. Nearly 80 % of all radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine are 99mTc-labelled compounds. Therefore, 99mTc-labelled galactosyl-methylated chitosan (GMC) nanoparticles were developed and characterized as liver-targeted nanoimaging carrier. GMC showed very high labeling efficiency of 99mTc stably for extended time (up to 3h). GMC showed enhanced hepatic contrast due to liver-specific uptake contrary to faint liver uptake of methylated chitosan (MC). Liver-targeted imaging of GMC indicated hepatic accumulation of GMC via specific interaction between galactose group of GMC and asialoglycoprotein receptors on the hepatocytes.
