Polymerization of Propylene Oxideby Using Novel Nano-sized Multi-metal Cyanide (MMC) Catalysts |

Double-metal cyanide (DMC) complexes are well-known catalysts for epoxide polymerization. As the catalysts do not significantly promote the isomerization of propylene oxide, polyethers having low unsaturation values and high molecular weight can be prepared, compared to potassium hydroxide-catalyzed polymerizations. Unfortunately, the DMC catalysts have some drawbacks as induction time of polymerization is too long, we modified them by controlling their size to nano range by applying reverse emulsion method. In addition, multi-metal catalysts were synthesized by utilizing the same technique. Polymerizations of propylene oxide were carried out using the highly active nano-sized multi-metal cyanide catalysts. High performance of the newly developed catalysts was demonstrated by comparing with conventional catalysts. |
