The copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO) using newly developed nano-sized multi-metal cyanide (MMC) catalyst systems was investigated in this study. MMC catalysts of nano-sized particle were prepared by applying reverse emulsion method. It was found that MMC catalysts consisting of ZnCl3, K3[Co(CN)6] and Y(CF3CO2)3 were very effective for alternating copolymerization of CHO with CO2. Catalysts were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and XRD. Effects of reaction conditions such as reaction time, temperature, CO2 pressure, and catalyst concentration on copolymerization were investigated. Best results were obtained from the reaction at 80 ℃ for 4 h, with catalyst concentration of 4 mg/mL, and CO2 pressure of 100 psi. IR, 1H NMR spectra, and molecular weight measurements have been carried out in order to investigate the structure of the resulting biodegradable polycarbonates. |
