Block copolymers containing liquid crystalline azobenzene in the side-chain segments exhibit superior properties due to their unique reversible trans–cis isomerization upon UV exposure and self-assembly into various nanostructures such as sphere, cylinder and lamellae. A series of novel liquid crystalline triblock copolymers (TBCs) containing azobenzene groups, with different compositions of the azo block, was successfully synthesized via reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in anisole solvent with new crystalline acrylamide monomer. Kinetic studies on the block copolymerization certify that it is a controlled process. The structures and properties of the newly designed TBCs were characterized by 1H NMR, DSC, UV, and GPC, respectively. Besides, the liquid crystalline properties and nanostructures were observed by OPM and AFM. |
