Effect of fluoro-illite on anti oxidation property in epoxy complex |

In this study, illite that is Eco-friendly, low cost, and high aspect ratio was used as a flame retardant additive to improve anti oxidation property of epoxy. Illite was pretreated by fluorination to improve the dispersion of hydrophilic illite in hydrophobic epoxy by introducing hydrophobic functional groups. Fluorination treatment improved the illite dispersion in epoxy solution before curing and that in the complex after curing. These enhanced dispersions were attributed to the increased affinity of illite to hydrophobic epoxy solution by introduced hydrophobic functional groups and the enhanced intercalation of epoxy polymer into illite through during fluorination treatment. In conclusion, the limited oxygen index (LOI) of fluorinated illite/epoxy complex increased about 24%, compared that of raw illite/epoxy complex, suggesting the fluorination treatment increased the anti oxidation properties of illite/epoxy complex. |
