Chemical decontamination of a contaminated component from a nuclear power plant |

A contaminated component from a nuclear power plant must be decontaminated to reduce the risk of radiation exposure to workers. Chemical decontamination can be effectively utilized to decontaminate the contaminated component. In general, decontamination processes using orgnic acids are widely used for the decontamination. However, these porcesses generate a considerable amount of radioactive resin wastes which are not easy to fabricate them into a stable form for final disposal. In this study, a chemical decontamination process using a chelate-free inorganic acid, which can greatly reduce the radioactive resin waste generation, was evaluated for the decontamintion of a contaminated component from a nuclear power plant. Before conducting the decontamination, detailed procedures for the decontamination were desigend through mock-up tests. The component was effectively decontaminated, and the decontamination factor showed a very high value. |
