Diels-Alder Reaction-Mediated Smart Self-Healing Hydrogels |

Three-dimensionally cross-linked soft materials with self-healing ability have aroused interest owing to their potentials in diverse biological applications. Recent studies have been focused on utilizing heat-responsive self-healing polymers which are covalently crosslinked through the Diels-Alder reaction. Despite the great advances in this field, new facile strategies to endow the self-healing soft materials with controllable crosslinking density as well as mechanical robustness are still needed. Herein, we introduce a new self-healing hydrogel materials consisting of maleimide-grafted cellulose nanofibrils and furan-encapsulating emulsions. We showed that the use of the emulsion-containing hydrogel system allowed us to adjust the crosslinking density of the hydrogel phase by regulation of the amount of furan released from emulsion drops. These results highlight that it is possible to develop a new self-healing technology that can enhance healing efficiency and mechanical properties. |
