The thin film polarizer by the shear coating and photopolymerization processes of a lyotropic liquid crystal |

For the fabrication of macroscopically oriented thin film polarizer (TFP), we newly synthesized methacrylate groups to the both side of perylene-based molecule (PDIM). PDIM formed a lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) phase in the aqueous solution and exhibited the anisotropic optical property. It was investigated by microscopic and spectroscopic analyses. The driving force of molecular self-assembly was the interaction among aromatic cores and the phase separation between hydrophilic ionic groups and hydrophobic groups. We added the 1 wt % of water-soluble photoinitiator into the PDIM LLC aqueous solution and fabricated the PDIM TFP by the mechanical shear coating and photopolymerization processes on the substrates. The macroscopically oriented PDIM TFP on flexible substrates will be the key for the flexible devices.
