The electrorheological(ER) fluids are one kind of suspension composed of highly polarizable particles (polymer or inorganic materials) dispersed in an insulating oil and their ER mechanism is characterized by the formation of particles upon application of varying electric fields. Chitosan as the disperse phase provides the ER behavior upon application of the electric field due to the polarizability of the branched amine and hydroxy group. The chitosan could make various derivatives by synthesized other compounds having a variety of polar groups. In this study, chitosan derivatives suspensions were prepared to investigate the effect as an ER fluid. Chitosan derivatives as the organic disperse phase were prepared by two-step chemical reaction. First, chitosan succinate was synthesized by chemical reactions between chitosan and succinic anhydride, then, the chitosan succinate reacted with various compounds consist of amine groups. The chitosan derivatives suspensions were obtained the ER performance under an electric field due to the polarizability of the branched polar group. The chemical characters of chitosan derivatives having amine groups were analyzed by measuring FT-IR, SEM, particle size analysis, the electrical properties of chitosan derivatives were investigated through the current density and conductivity of the suspensions. And rheological properties were measured using rheometer under various shear rates and electric fields.
