Nanocomposites using PS-modified SWNT and PS |

Composites of polymers and carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) can show enhanced mechanical and electrical properties. Typical blending methods can easily produce SWNT/polymer composites but their property profiles are usually difficult to be optimized due to the inherent phase separation of hard SWNTs and soft polymers. In this study, we formulated PS (polystyrene) modified SWNTs using mono end-functional polystyrenes which can be synthesized using NMP (nitroxide mediated radical polymerization) process. The introduction PS chains in the outer walls of SWTN dramatically increased solubility and dispersion of PS modified SWNTs in PS matrix. The detailed structural and physical characterization of these SWNT nanocomposites will be discussed. |
