Injectable hyaluronic acid/gelatin hybrid hydrogels with improved mechnical and cell adhesion properties |

Hydrogels based on hyaluronic acid (HA), one of the major ECM components, are widely used as biomimetic materials due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. However their poor mechanical and cell adhesion properties limit their use as tissue engineering scaffolds. In this study, we generated HA/Gelatin hybrid hydrogels to overcome these. Gelatin can promote cell adhesion due to its abundant RGD sequences. To prepare hydrogels via enzyme-mediated cross-linking, HA-tyramine (HATA) and gelatin-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (GH) polymers were used. In vitro cell studies of hydrogels with varying GH portions show the addition of GH into HATA promoted cell spreading in hybrid hydrogels. Moreover, the hybrid hydrogels showed significantly enhanced mechanical properties compared to their single component hydrogels. Finally, we suggest that injectable HATA/GH hybrid hydrogels with improved cellular and mechanical properties have great potential in tissue engineering applications. |
