Fabrication and Properties of Polypropylene/Silica Hybrids |

Study of hybrid materials, obtained through sol-gel process by incorporating polymers with TEOS, has become popular as a simple and efficient approach to develop new organic-inorganic composite materials. By properly controlling the conditions of hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS in the presence of a preformed organic polymer, it is usually possible to obtain special composites having good interface adhesion and fine morphology. In this study, PP/silica hybrids were fabricated by sol-gel silica formation process. MAH grafted PP(MPP) and APTES were introduced as reactive compatibilizers. MPP was introduced to increase the interface adhesion between PP and silica, and APTES was utilized to react with MAH functional group in the MPP. Sol-gel silica was formed using TEOS mixture in the MPP reaction solution. The effects of silica content, silica type and introduction of compatibilizer on the morphology, mechanical and thermal properties were investigated and compared. |
