The main issue on surface damage in polymeric coatings with a high gloss is subject to micro-scale scratch, abrasion or mar. Generally speaking, these surface damage phenomena are responsible for early changes in apperance and loss of gloss. In our study, optical microscopy are utilized to charaterize the mar onset-point and critical normal load. Scanning laser profiling confocal microscopy is also carried out to measure the roughness of mar-induced damages as one of quantitative evaluations. Delta-luminance (ΔL) and delta-gloss (ΔG) measurements have been employed to obtain an index of mar visibility resistance by measuring the change in surface morphology before and after inducing mar damages. The technical approaches used in this study have greatly been effective to quantify the mar resistant of polymeric coatings where surface aesthetics is of primary concern. |
