Study on the Thermodynamic Interaction Characteristics between Polymers and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) |

To date, the majority of research on POSS has been devoted to the applications in nano-reinforced polymeric materials using copolymerization, grafting or blending. In this paper, we attempted to present a generalized functionalization method suitable for various polymer systems through the theoretical and experimental approaches. We prepared the polymer nanohybrid with different functional group by the melt mixing. The specific interaction between polymers and the functionalized POSS was quantified by the thermodynamic interaction energy density determined by the melting point depression method. And the thermodynamic solubility parameters of polymers and the functionalized-POSS were evaluated to derive the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter based on the method of Hoftyzer and Van Krevelen, and Hoy. We also characterized the interaction between the polymer and POSS by measuring the activation energy using the Kissinger method and the weighted relaxation time. |
