Anaerobic digestion is an effective method to determine biodegradability of polymer. In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was digested under anaerobic condition using thermophilic bacteria. Biodegradability of PLA was determined by measuring the amount of biogas evolved at 55 °C. Cellulose was employed as a positive reference with the mixture of domestic wastes and livestock excrements, while PLA was added as the test material. Total dry solids (TS) and the ash content of the volatile solids (VS) of slurry phase were measured at the beginning of test. The degree of biodegradation of cellulose was about 82% after 60 days, which was acceptable as the reference material. The biodegradability of PLA under the sludge condition was lower than the controlled compost condition. The change in pH was also observed during the fermentation. |
