In this study, we have developed mathematical models for the energy consumed and the emissions released during the entire life of a plastic material, PET bottles, with the suitable system boundary for various possible alternatives for the waste management. The model equations have been derived from the flow diagram based on the material and energy balances introducing several adjustable parameters. Also a simple model for wastes collection has been chosen reflecting its nonlinear functional characteristics. The final equations of the model for the whole system become highly nonlinear and of multivariable nature. The obtained mathematical model can thus be used for comparing various waste management alternatives and more importantly for finding the optimal conditions for the best waste management of plastic materials. The results and methodology for the latter are the contents of this paper and the comprehensive study for the former will be reported elsewhere.
