Ion-exchange membranes have been used in various industries because of their superior selectivity for specific ions and wide applicability. Polystyrene has been used for the membrane matrix, which has thermal stability and easy processability and can participate in a sulfonation reaction. In this study, terpolymer for ion-exchange membranes was synthesized by solution polymerization based on styrene, hydroxyethyl acrylate and lauryl methacrylate (Sty-HEA-LMA). The HEA was used for the crosslinking reaction because of having a hydroxyl groups and LMA was used for improving durability of the membrane that has flexibility property. The ion-exchange membranes were prepared by crosslinking with HEA via the esterification reaction by sulfosuccinic acid as a crosslinking agent and sulfonation reaction to introduce sulfuric acid group (SO3-H+). The resultant membranes were characterized such as water uptake, ion-exchange capacity and electrical property by chemical and electrical methods. |
