Because of some useful features, rare metals are essential for high-tech industries, and the demands for rare metals are increasingly growing. However, the prices of rare metals tend to fluctuate, owing to a weak supply system. Traditional recycling processes of rare metals require several steps of pre-treatments with strong acids and alkali followed by extraction using organic solvents which can create extensive environmental damage. Therefore, the efficient recovery of rare metals is very important process and various methods have been developed using microorganisms. One alternative to processes for rare metals is to use the ability of specialized bacteria to reduce(bioreduction). A second alternative to techniques is to use bacterial enzymes to immobilize metallic species as metal precipitates(biomineralization). Final techniques is to use extracellular-polysaccharide (EPS) to adsorb rare metals (biosorption). In this view, the recovery of rare metal ions using microorganisms will be discussed from nature, wastewater and/or discarded high-tech product. |
