In order to flame retard polymers or to protect them from fire, flame retardant additives can be incorporated into them. Flame retarding system is classified into two types; additive- and reactive-approach. To investigate the flame retardancy according to incorporating method, a methacrylate-type flame retardant with phosphorus-containing compound, 2-[(diphenoxyphosphoryl)oxy]ethyl methacrylate (DPEMA), was synthesized. DPEMA was then polymerized and used as additive-type flame retardant in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Also, the copolymerization of DPEMA and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was conducted to apply to reactive-type system. The flame retardancy of two-type systems was evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL 94), and the differences between the two systems were examined via various analyzes. |
