Boron nitride nanotubes(BNNTs) have a structure similar to that of carbon nanotubes, but exhibitdifferent characteristics from those of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Although theirmechanical properties are similar, BNNTs exhibit different properties such aselectrical insulation, high thermal stability, and neutron shielding. However,large-scale production of BNNTs through high-temperature plasma methods resultsin low purity, and the development of technology for purification is still inits infancy. In addition, the chemically inert characteristics of BNNTs makefunctionalization difficult, resulting in limiting further applications. Here,we report non-covalent functionalization methods using molecular interactionsbetween polymers and BNNTs and purification methods based on thesefunctionalized BNNTs. Furthermore, BNNTs research in KIST would be brieflyintroduced. |
