Star polymer consists of several linear chains linked at single junction point. Star polymers can be made by the linking reaction of living linear polymer anions prepared by anionic polymerization with divinylbenzene, which is known to result a series of star-shaped polymers with different number of branches but with homogeneous branch length. Nonetheless the linking reaction scheme is not clearly understood. In this work, we investigated the linking reaction mechanism by synthesizing low molecular weight polystyryl anions by anionic polymerization and having them reacted with divinylbenzene of controlled stoichiometry to make star polymers. After the addition of divinylbenzene, the reaction mixtures were collected and the linking reactions were quenched at different reaction times. The star polymers collected on the course of the linking reaction were characterized by HPLC and MALDI-TOF MS to elucidate the mechanism of the linking reaction by divinylbenzene. |
