Effective Formation of Fe-Nx Active Sites in Fe-N-C Catalysts Mediated by Mulitple Fe-N Coordinated Precursors |

Fe-N-C catalysts have been intensitvely studied due to remarkable activity for electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Recently, a number of spectroscopic studies identify Fe-Nx coordinated structures as the most promising active sites. However, the influence of type of prcursors on formation of active sites is not well understood due to emphirical synthetic conditions. In this work, we employ phenanthroline isomers to reveal the correlation between precursor coordination state and active site formation during pyrolysis in Fe-N-C catalysts. Through detailed spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization, it is highlighted that use of precursors with multiple coordination, including bidentate coordination, between Fe and N atoms is highly critical for effective derivation of Fe-Nx active sites for highly active and stable ORR electrocatalysts. |
