Preparation and characterization of the novel composite membrane based on SPAES for suppressed vanadium cross-over for vanadium redox flow battery |

The novel composite membranes, based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) with inorganic additives containing free radical for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB), have been developed by using a simple solution casting method. We fabricated composite membranes by optimizing the various contents of inorganic additives in the SPAES matrix. The SPAES composite membranes showed the low vanadium permeation due to the tortuous-pathway effect ascribed to blocking the ion cluster and the Donnan effect caused by the change of free-radical of nanoparticle to positive charge at VRFB cell charging. The optimized composite membrane exhibited better efficiencies than the pristine SPAES membrane, and the efficiencies were maintained during 100 cycle operation at current density 100 mA cm-2 in VRFB. |
