A newly designed hierarchical superstructure based on benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide with azobenzene mesogens (3AZO-BA) was synthesized to fabricate dual-responsive electro-optical device. The 3AZO-BA in the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) medium formed three-dimensional networks by nanophase separations and hydrogen bonding. Since the formation of self-assembled 3AZO-BA netwoks (only 1 wt%) finely dispersed in the NLC medium and the good affinity with the NLCs, the light scattering of the LC physical gels (LCPGs) can be converted to a transmittance state at lower driving voltage (22 V) than polymer-based systems (around 100 V). The rewritable properties of the LCPGs were demonstrated by trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties.
