Electrochemical Methane-to-Alcohol Conversion at Room Temperature |

Electrochemical partial oxidation of methane to value-added product is attractive approach to utilization of natural gas. But high stability of methane and low productivity is still remains a challenge. Here we achieve room temperature CH4-to-C2H5OH conversion with highly active NiO-ZrO2 catalyst. Ordered macropore structure of NiO-ZrO2 catalyst allow high mass transport of ions and serve to improve productivity in electrochemical conversion. At the optimum catalyst composition, we achieve C2H5OH production of 181.9μmol gcat-1 hr-1. We unveil that the CH4 conversion is achieved by spontaneous formation of active surface oxygen and methoxy intermediates using DFT calculation. |
